Dollhouse Dreams up and running after storm damage

Posted by

A Fort Madison business is back home after storm damage ripped through its store this spring. But, the recovery process isn't over yet.

Dollhouse Dreams on Avenue G had tarps over the roof and lots of water damage in March.

Now, the roof is patched up and store is up and running. The owner hopes business will come back.

"It's been a lot of hills to climb and brick walls to push through," owner Brenda Derr said.

The roof was damaged during a wind storm on March 6. Owner Brenda Derr said she was able to patch the roof and clean up the damage.

"The insurance did what they could do, but we had to bring in our own funds to make the whole thing work," Derr said.

She moved the business next door during the recovery process and thought it would keep business going, but it hurt business.

"People thought we had shut our doors because there was brown paper on the windows," Derr said. "We did that because it was an eye sore and there was construction going on."

Customer Jason Anderson comes down from the Quad Cities to shop at the store with his kids.

He said it looks better than when it first opened.

"There are just not that many around," Anderson said. "Having it in Fort Madison is great. The products they have is great and they have a big selection that you can do a lot of projects."

Derr said there have been changes.

"We have expanded our ice cream parlor, it's called 'Megan's old fashion ice cream parlor,' Derr said. "My daughter went to culinary school and now she's making homemade desserts and sandwiches."

Anderson said all of the owner's hard work has paid off.

"Downtown has struggled a bit and it's nice to see people doing things in order to bring it back."

Derr hopes to complete the roof project by the end of this month.

She's bringing back children programs next month and is working on a LEGO night for families in the area.
